Transformers

TF ReviewI’ve been a Transformers fan since I was a little tike, and like many others than grew up in the 80’s, was pumped for the live action movie. I will say that going into the movie I was a little sceptic about how it was going to turn out. Since Transformers started as a toy, and nothing else, there was no story connected to the figures. Then after the mass amount of popularity it became a cartoon and later a cartoon movie. None of which really containing human characters nor took place on earth. I was interested to see how they molded all that together, and how the giant alien robots ended up on earth. I was also curious as to how well they would portray all the characters I grew up knowing, such as Optimus Prime and Megatron.

The plot of the movie is a litte shallow, but when you are dealing with something as far fetched as robots that morph into vehicles how deep can you really make a plot. The basis of the story is what they call the “All Spark” which basically harnesses the power of the universe, and is what created the robot race and their planet Cybertron. The robots are split into two different sides, the good Autobots and the evil Decepticons. After losing the “All Spark” due to the raging war on their planet they set out to find it. Ironically enough, it just happened to end up on earth.

The character build up is great, but maybe a little too great. The entire first hour of the flick is all about introducing characters. The casting for Transformers was right on as far as I’m concerned. Shai LeBeouf was fantastic in his role as Sam Witwicky the main “human” character. They should have a new award just for his performance with Magan Fox. It would be called, kicking ass even with a crappy supporting actress. The only reason Megan Fox is there is because Micheal Bay directed it, and he always has to have smokin hot chicks with zero acting abbility, Also known as eye candy. Other than her, the entire cast was great.

Now the main main characters are of course the robots. Since we haven’t technologically evolved far enough to create intelligent robotic organisms that transform into earth vehicles, CGI is the next best thing. The visual effects in this movie are like nothing you’ve ever seen before. I would say 80% of the movie involves some sort of drastic visual effects, and they are mind blowing. From the robots themselves, to the explosions of the fight sequences the effects are next to perfect. Having watched the movie many times, there are a few parts where you can tell the guy doing it didn’t have his cofffee in the morning.

Overall, this movie is on top of my list of favorite movies for more reasons than one of course. If you are looking for an in depth dramatical experience this is not the one for you. However, if you are in the market for an in your face, all out, thriller extravaganza this is the best one out there. I’ve heard some say that it was over the top and too much, but I think that’s what makes it what it is. I mean come on, they’re 20′ tall robots from the far reaches of space. What do you want, Optimus Prime to sit down and have a deep one on one dialogue with Iron Hide?

I would definatley hands down give Tranformers a 5 out of 5. Based soley on the premace of the movie it hit right on and I couldn’t have asked for more. Some say it’s too long, where I say it’s not long enough. I can’t wait until the sequal makes it’s way to the theaters. Don’t just rent it, this is a buyer FO SHO!!
